Jelly on a tree

Taking advantage of this ideal fungi-hunting weather, I popped out for a quick lunchtime stroll around Woods Mill nature reserve. Well worth the trip, as I spotted these two luscious looking jelly funguses (or should that be fungi?).

These are so distinctive I think I might actually know what they are...

Yellow Brain (Tremella mesenterica) - very yellow, looks like a brain. Was growing on hazel, I think - whatever it was, it had catkins.

Jelly Ear (Auricularia auricula-judae) - feels like jelly, looks like an ear.

  1. Just read this in Peter Marren's Mushrooms: "Yellow Brain... is, in fact, a parasite of a much less conspicuous crust fungus, Peniophora, which shares its branch. There is a second Yellow Brain, T. aurantia,... which looks almost identical except that it has a different host, the very common Hairy Curtain Crust Stereum hirsutum.
